The Boring Company is expanding its underground footprint in Las Vegas by increasing the number of its tunnels. It will also significantly add to the number of vehicles in its Vegas Loop system.
The expansion plans were revealed during a tour of the company’s infrastructure, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Boring Co. launched the first phase of a ride service from and to Harry Reid International Airport last year. Passengers can cop a ride to the airport from any of the following Loop stations: Resorts World, Encore, Westgate, and the Las Vegas Convention Center.
According to company president Steve Davis, the Airport shuttle is averaging 50 rides per day.
The next phase will add a 2.2-mile tunnel linking the Westgate station to a new station at 4744 Paradise Road. Users will be able to access the airport via Paradise and University Center Drive, slashing 2 miles of above-ground driving from the trip. When the system is completed in a few months, The Boring Co will increase the strength of its fleet to 160 vehicles.
The third phase will create another tunnel that starts from 4744 Paradise and ends on 5032 Palo Verde Road. It will help passengers avoid delays at the stoplight at the intersection of Tropicana and University Center.
The Boring Co. plans to construct more stations on the University Center loop at this stage. It will also expand the fleet to up to 300 electric vehicles.
The last phase will bring a Loop station to the airport itself, but there is no definite timeline for it yet, according to Davis.
The Boring Co. will require up to 600 permits for the full expansion, bringing the total underground miles to 68 and the number of stations to 104. Davis, however, hopes his company can obtain permits more quickly, similar to the arrangement SpaceX has with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Acquiring an operator’s license allowed the space company to launch 150 missions in 2025.
Davis predicts the Strip and Las Vegas Boulevard segment of the expansion will start in 2027. The Boring Co. has already procured pieces of land to accommodate the new stations.
The tunnelling company will introduce more vehicles at the height of the tunnel expansion. At that time, passengers will have access to 1,200 Teslas, including the Robovan. The electric van will be deployed during events that draw crowds, such as game days at the Allegiant Stadium.
