Tesla has released its Q2 2024 vehicle safety report, showcasing the effectiveness of its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) technologies in preventing accidents.
According to Tesla, the key to their vehicles’ safety lies in a combination of passive safety features, active safety mechanisms, and advanced driver-assistance systems. This approach has proven itself to be extremely effective, as according to the data released by Tesla, in Q2 2024 their vehicles recorded one crash for every 6.88 million miles (11.07 million km) driven using Autopilot technology.
This is slightly behind the figure reported in Q1 2024, but it is the best result ever for Tesla in any second quarter since the company started reporting these statistics in 2018.
In comparison, drivers not using Autopilot experienced one crash for every 1.45 million miles (2,333,354 km) driven. These figures starkly contrast with national data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which reported one crash per 670,000 miles (1,078,260 km) in the United States.
“In the 2nd quarter, we recorded one crash for every 6.88 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology. For drivers who were not using Autopilot technology, we recorded one crash for every 1.45 million miles driven. By comparison, the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA (from 2022) shows that in the United States there was an automobile crash approximately every 670,000 miles,” Tesla wrote in the report.
After a hiatus in reporting from Q4 2022, Tesla resumed publishing its safety data earlier this year. You can see the full report here.
