Tesla’s Optimus robot shows off amazing progress in latest video

Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, has taken a giant stride forward in its development journey. The official Tesla Optimus account on X has shared a new video showcasing the robot’s remarkable progress that has left tech enthusiasts and robotics aficionados in awe.

The video starts with Optimus engaging in a self-calibration routine, a vital step in adapting to new environments. It highlights how the robot utilizes its vision and joint position sensors to accurately map the positions of its limbs in space, all without external feedback. This advanced spatial awareness enables Optimus to interact with objects and perform tasks with a high level of precision and dexterity.

One of the highlight demonstrations in the video is Optimus’s ability to sort blue and green blocks into matching trays. The robot effortlessly grasps each block and sorts them, and while the video has been sped up, its pace is not that far off from human dexterity. Even when faced with dynamic environmental changes, like a person standing nearby and rearranging the blocks, Optimus quickly adapts and continues with the task at hand. It even shows that it can fix its own errors, shown by Optimus rotating a block that landed on its side after it had been sorted.

The video also shows just how far, and how quickly Optimus has progressed since it’s first public demonstration at AI Day just under one year ago. Instead of needing to be wheeled out on stage, Optimus now amazing balance and flexibility, executing yoga poses that demand standing on one leg and extending its limbs. While these poses may not be directly related to practical tasks, they demonstrate Optimus’s ability to control its body with precision and maintain stability.

This amazing progress has been possible because Optimus now operates on the same end-to-end neural network as Tesla’s vehicle fleet, allowing it to process video input and generate precise control outputs.
