Late last month Tesla released a new feature on their website that allows owners to easily set-up and share their car with other people. The implementation of this feature is seen as a big step towards a Robotaxi network, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk still believes could happen this year.
It is also a very useful feature for anyone who may rent out their Tesla on a car sharing network like Turo, which is set to open in British Columbia any day now. Before this update, you either had to give the person your Tesla credentials, or contact Tesla directly to set them up with access.
At the time the feature was released, it was only available in the US. But now Canadians can also easily provide (and remove) access to your vehicle after logging in to your Tesla account and navigating to the new “Car Access” section.
To add a new driver, all you need is a first and last name, and an email address. Tesla allows you to add up to 5 additional drivers using this method.
After clicking ‘Add Driver’ and entering the details, hit ‘Save’ and two emails will automatically be sent.
The first is an email notifying them of their new access with links to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to download the Tesla mobile app. The second is an email with a link to set a new password for the account (click to enlarge).
To remove access for a specific driver, simply navigate back to the ‘Car Access’ screen, and click on the ‘Remove’ button. Once the driver is successfully removed, an email will be sent to that person letting them know they no longer have access to your vehicle.
Let us know in the comments below if you’ll be using the new feature to give access to your Tesla to friends and family (or why you won’t).
