Tesla’s Giga Shanghai has achieved a major production milestone with the factory building its 3,000,000th vehicle this week. Since its opening in late 2019, Giga Shanghai has been a powerhouse, contributing significantly to Tesla’s electric vehicle (EV) production and expanding the company’s market share around the world.
The journey to 3 million vehicles has been marked by several key milestones. Tesla was able to take a mud pit and build Giga Shanghai in just 11 months, with the factory breaking ground in January 2019 and the first cars rolling off the production line in November of the same year. At the time, this milestone was seen as remarkable, reflecting the speed and efficiency at which Tesla would operate in China.
Within 2 years, by August 2022, Tesla celebrated the factory rolling out its 1 millionth vehicle, marking Giga Shanghai as the fastest-growing factory in Tesla’s lineup. Fast forward to September 2023, and Tesla had reached 2 million vehicles produced at the Shanghai facility

The new milestone of 3 million vehicles produced comes less than a year after the 2 million mark, highlighting the factory’s increasing efficiency and output. The Model Y, which has become Tesla’s most popular vehicle globally, has played a major role in this growth. With a growing demand for the Model Y in both domestic and international markets, it’s no surprise that a red Model Y is the 3,000,000th vehicle to roll off the production line, according to a photo shared by the official Tesla Asia account on X.

Giga Shanghai was Tesla’s first overseas Gigafactory, designed initially to serve the Chinese market but quickly expanded to supply vehicles to markets in Europe and Asia, and until very recently, Canada. The factory has been pivotal in lowering production costs thanks to the localization rate of Tesla China’s supply chain exceeding 95%, allowing Tesla to offer more competitively priced models in these regions.
As of the most recent update from Tesla in the Q2 2024 shareholder deck, Giga Shanghai has an installed production capacity of >950,000 vehicles.
