Sales of Tesla cars in China in August hit their highest figure this year, confirming that Giga Shanghai is back to full capacity to meet strong demand from consumers.
As we have previously reported, Tesla Giga Shanghai sold 86,697 vehicles in August. According to new data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Monday, of these, 23,241 were exported. This means the company sold 63,456 vehicles domestically in China in August, the highest figure in 2024. This number of units sold shows that sales are down 1.91 percent compared to the same month last year. At the same time, it is 37.27 percent higher than the 46,227 vehicles sold domestically in July, according to CnEVPost.
Sales figures are expected to rise even more in September, as Tesla always focuses on domestic deliveries in the last month of the quarter.
Tesla sold 388,000 vehicles in China from January to August 2024. This is a 0.57 percent decrease compared to the same period last year, which shows that despite the difficult economic situation, Tesla cars still attract significant attention and love from consumers. At the moment, Giga Shanghai offers Model Y and Model 3 for orders both in China and for consumers around the world.
It is important to note the fact that sales of cars made at Giga Shanghai, including exports, increased by 3.02 percent last month compared to 84,159 cars a year earlier. This indicates an increase in demand, which is important after its decline at the beginning of 2024. Total car sales in August increased by 16.97 percent compared to 74,117 cars sold in July.
Exports from Giga Shanghai increased by 19.4 percent in August compared to 19,465 cars a year earlier. However, it was down 16.67 percent from 27,890 units in July, which is not surprising given the fact that the first month of each quarter is always export-oriented.
Separate sales data for Model 3 and Model Y in China for August is not yet available. However, it is known at this time that, out of the total 86,697 units produced at Giga Shanghai in August, Model Y sales accounted for 56,309 units, accounting for 64.95 percent of sales. Model 3 sales were 30,388 units, accounting for 35.05 percent of total sales in August. Model 3 sales increased by 61.27 percent compared to the same month last year. This was made possible by the refreshed Model 3, which is attracting more and more new customers.
Retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China reached 1,027,000 units in August, up 43.2 percent from a year ago and up 17 percent from July. Retail sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China in August were 583,000 units. This corresponds to 56.8 percent of all NEV retail sales and up 18.5 percent from the same month last year.
Tesla’s share of the Chinese NEV market was 6.18 percent in August. This was up from 5.27 percent in July but down from 9.04 percent a year earlier, CnEVPost calculations show. In the BEV market, the company’s share was 10.88 percent, up from 9.59 percent in July but down from 13.18 percent a year earlier.
