Tesla has achieved another milestone in autonomous driving technology as newly produced Model Ys at Giga Texas now drive themselves from the production line to the outbound lot without human intervention.
Back in January Tesla announced that newly built vehicles were now capable of autonomously navigating a 1.2-mile (1.9km) route at its Fremont factory in California from the end of the production line to the logistics lot. While this was a big step for Full Self-Driving (FSD), it also had other benefits, like improving factory efficiency, reducing reliance on human drivers, and thus saving the company money.
At the time we speculated that autonomous driving at Giga Texas would soon follow, and this week newly built Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles are also now driving themselves around the factory complex just outside of Austin.
On Monday drone pilot Joe Tegtmeyer spotted the new vehicles navigating factory roads without a human behind the wheel until they reach their designated parking areas in the west outbound lot about 2 miles (3.2km away).

Tesla plans to extend its autonomous capabilities beyond factory settings. The company has announced intentions to launch an unsupervised robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, by June 2025. This service will allow Tesla vehicles to operate without a human driver, offering paid trips to passengers. As recently as last week CEO Elon Musk confirmed the company is still on track to launch this service in June.
