Tesla has made a change to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) transfer policy that clarifies one of the biggest questions regarding the one-time offer.
Last week Elon Musk announced Tesla was going to give owners with FSD the one-time opportunity to transfer the software to a newly purchased Tesla. When the actual requirements for the program were created and released, there was one clause in the contract that gave people pause, and that was clause 4 which appeared to say FSD would be lost if you were to later sell the car that had FSD transferred on to it. Here’s what it said:
4. The Full Self Driving capability can only be transferred once and so cannot be transferred to another vehicle or to another person even if the vehicle is privately sold. This offer cannot be combined with any other promotion, and is not redeemable for cash. (emphasis added)
We covered this in our article on the requirements and other things you should consider before pulling the trigger, and now Tesla has updated the wording to clear any doubts. The new wording, shared by @DirtyTesLa on Twitter, no longer references private sales, ensuring that FSD will transfer to the new owner when you sell the car. Here’s the new wording:
4. The Full Self Driving capability can only be transferred once and so cannot be transferred to another vehicle. This offer cannot be combined with any other promotion, and is not redeemable for cash, and cannot be transferred to another person.
According to @DirtyTesLa, he was provided a new contract with the new wording, so if you haven’t signed your contract yet, make sure it includes this version that specifies that FSD will transfer to a new owner when you sell the vehicle at a later date.
Also be sure to read our article on the things you should consider before buying a new Tesla to transfer your FSD. One other point for Canadians to consider is regarding Hardware 4 (HW4). If you are wanting to take advantage of this deal to get a car equipped with the latest HW4, the only cars currently being delivered in Canada that include it are the Model S and Model X. Since Tesla stopped sending cars from Fremont to Canada, we are now receiving Model 3 and Model Y cars built at Giga Shanghai, which has not yet switched over to include HW4 in production.
