Tesla unveils longest-range Model Y in China

Tesla has just launched the latest member of the Model Y lineup in China: the five-seat Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive Edition. The SUV, which has the longest range in the series, costs RMB 288,500 (C$56,900/US$40,500). The first deliveries are within 2–4 weeks.

According to CLTC testing, the new Model Y can travel 821 kilometers on a single charge. It runs on a 225 kW (302 hp) single-motor setup, using the same 78.4 kWh battery pack from LG Energy Solution found in the 830-km Model 3. The SUV sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in about 5.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 201 km/h.

This new trim is priced roughly C$5,000/US$3,500 (RMB 25,000) higher than the standard Model Y, which offers a 593-km range. Even so, it is still more affordable than the all-wheel-drive and six-seat versions, which deliver around 750 km of range and start at RMB 313,500 and RMB 339,000, respectively.

To further sweeten the deal for buyers, Tesla is offering a 5-year 0% financing and an RMB 8,000 paint customization credit. To compare, the six-seat Model Y L comes with a 3-year 0% financing offer.

This launch comes during a challenging year for Tesla in China. From January to September, Model Y sales fell by 13.27% compared to last year’s, with only 292,843 units sold. Meanwhile, Model 3 sales rose 14.12% over the same period. The new trim appears to be part of Tesla’s plans to boost sales and remain competitive in China’s EV market.
