Tesla is expanding its European footprint with the announcement of a new research and development hub set to open in Germany in 2026. Located in Berlin-Köpenick, between downtown Berlin and the company’s Giga Berlin factory, the site is expected to house up to 250 engineers and technicians dedicated to advancing materials research, vehicle design, and drive system development.
According to Lars Moravy, Tesla’s engineering VP, who announced the new R&D Center on Wednesday, the facility will initially be staffed by around 130 employees, many of whom are currently working at Giga Berlin or other smaller Tesla locations in the region.
Over time, the headcount is projected to grow to 250, making the site one of Tesla’s largest R&D bases in Europe.
Moravy said the center will serve as a hub for groundbreaking projects, including new electric vehicle (EV) platforms, battery development, and charging infrastructure research. Materials science is also expected to be a focus, supporting Tesla’s broader strategy of reducing costs and improving efficiency across its vehicle lineup.
The location’s proximity to major universities in Berlin was a significant factor in the decision, offering Tesla access to academic talent and research partnerships. Moravy also highlighted the benefits of the site’s energy supply and transport links, both critical for large-scale R&D operations.
German officials have praised Tesla’s decision to expand in Berlin. Franziska Giffey, Berlin’s Senator for Economic Affairs, called the project a “lighthouse” for international research and development. Local leaders also welcomed the investment, noting that the district had been competing with other European locations for Tesla’s selection since late 2024. (via rbb24)
