Tesla will soon launch a train to its Gigafactory, directly from Berlin. According to the Minister of Infrastructure of Brandenburg, it will start operating in April, taking people to Giga Berlin in just 40 minutes.
Trains for Tesla employees are expected to run from Berlin-Lichtenberg to Tesla-Süd train station starting April 1, 2024. Brandenburg Infrastructure Minister Rainer Genilke announced this to the transport committee of the Brandenburg state parliament on Thursday and provided further details, according to the RBB.
The route will most likely run through Biesdorfer-Kreuz, with a stop in Erkner, Genilke said. It will depart early in the morning to transport workers for the morning shift.
“This is planned primarily for the early shift. As we have now found out, the train is scheduled to depart Berlin-Lichtenberg at 5:01 am and arrive at the Tesla Süd site at 5:41 am,” said the minister.
The rail connection is part of schedule coordination between Tesla and DB Netz AG as rail infrastructure operator. The state is not involved, Genilke said. The new connection was ordered and funded by Tesla. The company explained that the additional offering should also be available for free use to all other travelers. This greatly improves convenience for local residents, allowing them to move around the area free of charge.
“The state has no indication that these connections would lead to restrictions on rail service with Poland,” the minister continued to the transport committee.
According to the company, Giga Berlin employs approximately 12,000 people. Most of them come from Berlin. That is why expanding connections with Berlin will play an important role in relieving road congestion near the factory area and reducing the harmful impact of cars on the environment.
“Direct communication with Berlin has the greatest positive effect on the development of public transport and reducing traffic congestion around the factory,” Tesla said previously.
This train will be additional to the one that already runs to Giga Berlin. It has been running to the Tesla site since September 2023.
