Tesla has begun customer deliveries of its new Model Y L in China, marking the official launch of the automaker’s first long-wheelbase version of the popular electric SUV.
When Tesla opened orders last month, it indicated that the first deliveries would take place in September. By kicking off deliveries just two days into the month, Tesla has not only met its promise but slightly accelerated it, a move that highlights the company’s ongoing push to streamline production and logistics in its largest international market.

The Model Y L is a significant addition to Tesla’s lineup in China, offering a stretched wheelbase and six-seat configuration designed to meet the needs of larger families and customers looking for more rear passenger comfort. The longer design provides extra legroom in the second row, while the six-seat layout introduces a more premium feel with captain’s chairs in the middle row.
By tailoring the Model Y to local preferences, Tesla is following a strategy that other global automakers have long used in China, where long-wheelbase versions of sedans and SUVs are in high demand. While the Model Y L is currently only available in China, indications in the vehicle and mobile app software indicate it will eventually be available globally.
CEO Elon Musk has since confirmed this, saying however it won’t start production in North America until late 2026, or maybe never if the company’s autonomous driving ambitions come to reality.
