Tesla has reached a major milestone in its global energy ambitions, with the first Megapacks produced at its new Shanghai Megafactory now on their way to Australia.
The shipment marks the beginning of exports from Tesla’s first energy storage factory outside the United States and represents a significant step in the company’s efforts to scale its renewable energy storage business worldwide.
Tesla shared the news on X, noting that the first shipment had set sail but did not disclose the exact delivery location within Australia. However, the company previously announced that Australia would be the first international market for Shanghai-made Megapacks.

The Shanghai Megafactory officially began production on February 11, 2025, just under a year after construction started in May 2024. Located in the Lingang area of Pudong—directly adjacent to Tesla’s electric vehicle Gigafactory—the energy storage facility is designed to produce up to 10,000 Megapacks annually, with a total capacity of nearly 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh), matching the output of Tesla’s other Megafactory in Lathrop, California.
Each Megapack is capable of storing approximately 3,900 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. These utility-scale energy storage systems are crucial for stabilizing power grids, integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind, and preventing blackouts during periods of high demand.
