Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory is nearing completion just five months after construction began. With its rapid development pace, the factory is on track to begin production in the first quarter of 2025, offering a significant boost to Tesla’s already thriving energy business.
This factory, located in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai, marks Tesla’s first Megapack production facility outside North America. When construction first began Tesla’s timeline seemed optimistic to many critics, but according to the most recent update from the company, the project is on track to begin Megapack production in Q1 2025.
“The Shanghai Megafactory remains on track to begin shipping Megapacks in Q1 2025,” Tesla wrote in the Q3 2024 shareholder deck.
The Shanghai factory’s impressive construction speed highlights China’s efficiency in infrastructure development. In comparison, Tesla’s Lathrop Megafactory in California took 14 months from groundbreaking to begin production. Shanghai’s Megafactory, on the other hand, is expected to be completed in just seven to eight months—nearly half the time.

Tesla’s Megapack, a utility-scale battery energy storage system, has seen surging demand as more companies and utilities seek renewable energy solutions. The Shanghai Megafactory will play a key role in meeting the high demand for Megapacks by producing up to 10,000 units annually, equivalent to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage capacity.
This will effectively double Tesla’s global Megapack production, as its Lathrop, California factory is already producing the same volume.
Once operational, the Shanghai Megafactory aims to export Megapacks to overseas markets, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
