Tesla sales decline 40% in Europe in July

Tesla sold 40 percent fewer cars in Europe in July as sales continue to plummet. The automaker’s loss, however, was a gain for Chinese EV makers, who increased their market share.

Tesla sold only 8,800 EVs on the continent, even though the company increased production at Giga Berlin in Germany. The launch of the refreshed Model Y apparently did not help things. Total sales in 2025 stood at 119,000 units, representing a 50% decrease year-over-year.

Sales in the UK declined by about 60 percent as Tesla delivered fewer than 1,000 cars, bringing the total for the year to just 23,700.

Electric car sales, however, continued to move in the opposite direction to Tesla’s fortunes. Data from the European automotive association ACEA shows that BYD sales increased by more than 200 percent in July to 13,500 units. The automaker has sold 84,000 cars in Europe so far in 2025, up by 63,000 compared to the same period last year.

SAIC Motor, parent company of MG, Roewe, and IM Motors, sold 23,300 vehicles, up 13 percent year-on-year.

ACEA reports that EV sales in Europe grew 33 percent in July and 26 percent year-to-date to 1.37 million. It represented 17.4 percent of almost 8 million vehicles sold in the region.

Germany topped the charts with 297,000 electric cars finding new homes. The UK came second with 254,000 units. France rounded out the top three with 167,000. The UK, however, ranks the highest among the big three in terms of EV market penetration.
