Tesla’s robotaxi program has taken another visible step forward, with several validation vehicles spotted in Phoenix, Arizona in recent days. The sighting comes after state officials revealed in June that Tesla had formally applied with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to operate its autonomous ride-hailing service in the state, and is a tangible sign that Tesla is hoping to move quickly from regulatory greenlight to launching the service.
Arizona has become one of the most important proving grounds for autonomous vehicle technology, with Waymo launching its self-driving taxi service in the Phoenix area in 2018. Tesla filed its own application this summer to operate its robotaxi service in the Phoenix Metro Area, and while ADOT has yet to grant approval, the sighting of Tesla validation vehicles suggests the company is actively preparing for eventual deployment.

As you can see from the photos, Tesla is using roof-mounted LiDAR on its engineering vehicles. While Tesla still relies on vision only for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, the automaker does use these additional sensors to validate what its software is interpreting from what it sees through the multiple on-board cameras.
This testing phase is expected to ensure that Tesla’s autonomous platform meets Arizona’s operational requirements and delivers the smooth, safe ride quality expected in commercial robotaxi services.
With the validation vehicle spotted on public roads, we could see Tesla launch its robotaxi service in Phoenix in the coming weeks.
