Tesla has issued a new safety recall affecting a small number of its 2026 Model Y vehicles due to a manufacturing issue that could render the horn inoperable. The recall impacts just five vehicles, all of which may have a loose horn ground wire that prevents the horn from sounding when the pad is pressed.
According to documents submitted by Tesla on July 28, 2025 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue was first identified on July 9 during an end-of-line inspection at Giga Texas. The vehicle in question had intermittent horn functionality. Further investigation revealed that the horn ground wire’s ring terminal may not have been properly secured, allowing the circuit to open and disabling the horn.
Tesla quickly launched a review of production and service records with the help of its component supplier, Yanfeng International Automotive Technology. The review wrapped up on July 22, with the results identifying five vehicles with a potentially faulty horn ground wire. Two related warranty claims were also discovered, although no crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported in connection with the issue.
Tesla voluntarily initiated the recall the following day, July 23.
Unlike the majoirty of Tesla’s recalls that can be fixed with a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update, this one will require a physical service. Tesla is offering inspections and, if needed, repairs at no cost to customers. Service technicians will verify the integrity of the horn ground wire and secure it to proper specification if necessary.
Tesla has also confirmed that as of July 14, 2025, the issue has been corrected in production through enhanced fastener height inspections and retraining of assembly line operators on proper harness routing.
