As we reported last night, Tesla has raised the Model 3 and Model Y prices in Canada, which has priced the company out of the very popular iZEV rebate. For some time, the $5,000 federal iZEV rebate has been a cornerstone of EV purchases in Canada and is the base rebate around which many provinces built their own EV rebates.
So, what does this change mean for those provincial rebates, and are any provincial rebates still available for prospective Tesla owners?
British Columbia
British Columbia’s Go Electric rebate is based on the vehicle MRSP and individual income. With its current MRSP, no Tesla vehicles are eligible for the program.
Alberta
No provincial EV incentive program.
Saskatchewan
No provincial EV incentive program.
Manitoba
Manitoba’s EV rebate program provides $4,000 for eligible EVs under the $70,000 MRSP cap and $2,500 for pre-owned EVs. Much like Quebec, Manitoba also provides leasing rebates depending on the length of the lease. With the cap, the Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range All-Wheel Drives are eligible, as are all variations of the Model Y. However, the top-end Model 3 is outside of the cap and non-eligible.
Ontario
No provincial EV incentive program.
Quebec
The Quebec EV rebate is based on MRSP, and the Model 3 and Model Y will have options that fall under this threshold. With the new price changes, the Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range All-Wheel Drive will still fall under the cap. Meanwhile, the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range All-Wheel Drive will still be eligible. The incentive is a $4,000 rebate on a new purchase or a graduated scale for those who lease.
Quebec EV Rebate- Leasing Graduated Scale
12 to 23 months | $1,000 |
24 to 35 months | $2,000 |
36 to 47 months | $3,000 |
48 months and more | $4,000 |
We should note that the program is on a freeze between February 1 to March 31, 2025.
New Brunswick
The Plug-in NB program eligibility requires the vehicle to be iZEV qualified, and with the price change, Tesla falls out of eligibility.
Nova Scotia
Like the other Maritime provinces, Nova Scotia’s Electrify Nova Scotia Rebate Program requires a vehicle to be iZEV qualified to qualify for the rebate. Neither Model 3 nor Model Y will be eligible.
Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island’s Electric Vehicle Incentive mirrors the iZEV program in terms of eligibility, and with the latest price changes, the Teslas no longer qualify.
Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador’s $2,500 EV Rebate Program is still active, and Teslas qualify under the initiative even with the price hike. However, the rebate period ends on March 15, 2025.
Yukon
No territorial EV incentive program.
Nunavut
No territorial EV incentive program.
Northwest Territories
No territorial EV incentive program.
