Tesla prepares to launch in Colombia, its second market in South America

Tesla is preparing to launch operations in Colombia, marking its second expansion into South America after entering Chile in early 2024.

Over the past week, Tesla has published at least 10 positions across Colombia for a variety of roles, including Associate Sales Manager, Tesla Advisor (Sales and Delivery), Service Technician, and Service Advisor. (via Sawyer Merritt) These job postings suggest Tesla is preparing the foundation for its sales and service operations ahead of an official launch, just like we have seen the automaker do in other countries before officially announcing the expansion, including in Chile, where job postings appeared four months before the first retail store opened.

With postings for both Bogotá, the capital city, and Medellín, one of Colombia’s largest metropolitan areas, it appears Tesla plans to launch its presence in the country in more than one major urban hub from the start.

Colombia will become Tesla’s second official market in South America, following its debut in Chile in February 2024. Until now, Tesla’s presence in the region has been limited, with customers in other countries often relying on imports or third-party service providers.

So why did Tesla choose Colombia for its second official market in South America? While the country’s EV sector is still early in its development compared to North America or Europe, it is now experiencing rapid growth. Forecasts from Fitch Solutions predict that EV sales in Colombia will grow at an average annual rate of 17.7% between 2025 and 2034. This uptrend is being driven by government incentives, expanded charging infrastructure, and more models entering the market — including from rival Chinese automakers like BYD.

In the first quarter of 2025, Colombia saw a 345% year-over-year increase in EV vehicle sales in January alone, with 966 such vehicles sold compared to January 2024.

While Tesla has not yet announced when they will be launching sales and operations in Colombia, the timing of the postings indicates that could happen as soon as early 2026, mirroring the timeline seen in Chile. As with its Chilean debut, the company is expected to start with Model 3 and Model Y sales, the two best-selling EVs worldwide.
