Tesla nears launch of smartwatch companion app

Tesla looks like it is finally preparing to launch a smartwatch companion app. This long-requested addition will improve convenience for Tesla owners, allowing them to manage their vehicles more efficiently with just a tap on their wrists.

Although Tesla has supported its vehicles through iPhone and Android apps for years, there has surprisingly never been the addition of a companion app for smartwatches. This gap in functionality has been filled by third-party developers who created independent apps for devices like the Apple Watch, allowing owners to access features like locking and unlocking their cars and more.

These apps were obviously not officially supported by Tesla, and came with their own limitations and cost. Earlier this year Elon Musk finally said “Sure” to tesla adding their own smart watch app, and now it appears its launch is on the horizon.

In a recent decompiling of Tesla’s iOS app version 4.38 by @Tesla_App_iOS on X, coding hints that Tesla is actively working on smartwatch integration. Some of the code strings found include:

  • watch_app_pairing_state_remotely_signing_add_key_command,
  • watch_app_ble_peripheral, and
  • watch_app_no_product_selected

While this only gives us a glimpse of the full functionality of Tesla’s smartwatch app, this shows it will at least offer key vehicle controls like unlocking. Given the naming used in the code of “watch_app,” we also don’t know what platform this will launch on, but we assume it will be released on the iOS first, and then later on Android.

As for when it will be released, the code gives us no hints on that front, but with the end of the year in sight, it could come in Tesla’s annual holiday update around Christmas.

In addition to smartwatch support, Tesla’s latest app version includes coding for a “Banish,” or Reverse Smart Summon. This feature is the next to launch after Actually Smart Summon (ASS), and will enable your car to autonomously park itself after dropping you off in a parking lot.
