Tesla’s Model Y has been confirmed as the best-selling car in China for 2024, despite the impending “Juniper” update.
Tesla released the Model Y “Juniper” in China last week, but the anticipated arrival was not enough to dampen buyers’ interest in the electric SUV in the preceding year. The Model Y was the best-selling model in the world’s largest automobile market in 2024, according to China EV DataTracker. (via CarNewsChina)
The Tesla Model Y sold 480,309 units last year in China, up 5.24 percent from 2023 when the EV maker’s Chinese operation delivered 456,394. It trailed BYD’s Qin Plus until November, but a strong ending to the year, which saw Tesla sell 93,766 units, including 61,881 units of the Model Y, helping to push the SUV to the top of the list. The Qin Plus sedan narrowly lost out by less than 300 units.
Tesla, however, could not replicate the Model Y’s success in other parts of the world. According to CarIndustryAnalysis, the SUV’s sales dropped by 27 percent in Norway, 87 percent in Iceland, and 31 percent in Luxembourg.
The new Tesla Model Y refresh is now available in China, with deliveries scheduled for March. It has started strong, with a reported 50,000 orders on the launch day. Updates include improved aerodynamics, new light bars and bumpers on the front and rear, a front camera, a quieter cabin, and a more spacious trunk.
