Tesla Model Y is world’s best-selling car for third straight year, says Elon Musk

Tesla and CEO Elon Musk has announced on X that the Tesla Model Y is the world’s best-selling car for the third year in a row, a rare feat, especially for an all-electric vehicle.

The Model Y first claimed the global #1 spot in 2023, when it sold approximately 1.22 – 1.23 million units worldwide, surpassing long-time leaders like the Toyota Corolla and RAV4. This made it the first battery-electric vehicle ever to top the global sales charts.

In 2024, Tesla’s sales figures again put the Model Y at the top of the global rankings. According to industry data, worldwide deliveries stayed extremely strong — with estimates around 1.18 – 1.19 million Model Ys sold, narrowly edging out competitors.

Those figures mean the Model Y has now led global sales in 2023, 2024, and 2025, a remarkable feat for a vehicle that has only been in production since 2020. While final audited numbers for 2025 aren’t yet published, Musk believes the data he is seeing behind the scenes has put the Model Y atop the standings for a third year.

Adding to the significance, Tesla also rolled out a refreshed version of the Model Y — internally codenamed “Juniper” — which brought a suite of exterior, interior, and efficiency improvements to the company’s core crossover lineup, including sharper styling, enhanced aerodynamics, upgraded cabin tech, and refined ride quality.

What stood out with the Juniper launch was how Tesla coordinated the factory updates across its global manufacturing network — from Gigafactory Shanghai to Giga Berlin and the U.S. plants in Texas and California. This orchestration enabled the company to transition production lines swiftly and minimize disruptions, allowing for a seamless upgrade cycle that kept worldwide deliveries flowing without a significant production gap.
