Tesla Model Y Car Canopy lands in North America

Tesla’s Model Y Car Canopy has landed in Canada and the United States, just over a month after the product made its initial debut in China.

The canopy attaches to the rear of the Model Y, creating 4.5 square meters (approximately 48 square feet) of shaded space. The material used is a silver-coated fabric that offers waterproofing for moderate to heavy rain and UV50+ protection against the sun. It is also built to withstand winds of 20 to 40 km/h (12 to 25 mph), according to the Beaufort Wind Scale.

Tesla says the canopy can be easily attached to the vehicle without the need for ground supports. When fully extended, it measures 318.5 cm by 165 cm by 260 cm, and it comes with a compact carrying bag.

When the car canopy launched in China last month, it was priced at ¥699 (around C$135/US$98). Unfortunately, the price is a bit higher in North America, priced at $210 in Canada and $150 in the US. Here are some pictures of the car canopy from Tesla.

One important thing to keep in mind with this canopy is that you can’t close the trunk when it is attached to the vehicle. This essentially eliminates its biggest use car – for car camping – as the trunk needs to remain open whenever the canopy is attached to the car and in use.
