Tesla has added a new variant of the Model 3 in Canada, launching sales of the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD). At the same time, the company is no longer selling the RWD variant.
Tesla has made a similar change for the Model Y. You can read more about that here.
The changes coincide with Tesla switching to importing cars from the US into Canada, instead of importing them from China due to the new tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.
The new Model 3 LR RWD comes offers the most range in the Model 3 lineup, having an estimated 584km on a full charge. That is 36km more than the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant, and 161km more than the old RWD variant from China that has now been removed from the Design Studio.
As for the new discounted RWD variant, it was priced at $49,990, meaning buyers of the entry level Model 3 will now be paying $5,000 more, but will be getting significantly more range for their money.
Tesla says the new LR RWD is eligible for the $5,000 federal rebate, which will bring the price down to under $50,000 for many Canadians.
As with the new Model Y LR RWD, Transport Canada does not yet list the Model 3 LR RWD as an eligible vehicle, but we expect that to change soon.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this article stated there was a $4,000 difference between the old RWD and new LR RWD. This has been corrected, we apologize for any confusion.
