Tesla Megapack Battery Project Goes Live in Queensland Five Months Ahead of Schedule

A major new Tesla Megapack battery energy storage project is now online in Australia. The $110 million Brendale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Queensland has entered operation nearly five months ahead of schedule, delivering fast-acting, reliable power support to homes and businesses across the region.

The Brendale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), developed by Akaysha Energy, is located at the South Pine substation in Brisbane, the system is designed to play a critical role in supplying affordable and reliable electricity to households and businesses across Southeast Queensland.

The BESS has an installed capacity of 205MW and 410MWh, making it one of the more powerful grid-scale battery projects in the region. The system connects directly to Queensland’s transmission infrastructure and provides rapid-response support to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM), helping smooth out supply fluctuations and support the growing share of renewable energy on the grid.

Nick Carter, Chief Executive Officer at Akaysha Energy, highlighted the significance of the early completion.

“Bringing the Brendale BESS online ahead of schedule is a massive achievement for the entire team. The functionality of the BESS, combined with the Guvnor offtake agreement will ensure consumers have reliable energy when they need it, at an affordable price.”

The Brendale project adds to a growing list of large-scale Tesla Megapack deployments worldwide, reinforcing how grid-scale batteries are becoming a cornerstone of modern electricity networks. With faster deployment timelines and advanced grid-forming technology, projects like Brendale are setting the standard for how energy storage can support the transition to a cleaner, more resilient power grid.
