Tesla launches FSD (Supervised) in Australia; offers 30-day trials for new buyer

Tesla has launched Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Australia. It is the first time the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is available in a right-hand drive country.

The company had limited the technology to the US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and China since its introduction in 2020. Australian Tesla owners, however, can now get a piece of the action for a fee of AUD $10,100 ($6,560).

Customers buying new Teslas will receive a 30-day free FSD trial. Tesla will also sell Enhanced Autopilot, which offers lane changes, overtaking, auto-park, and on-ramp to off-ramp highway navigation, for AUD $5,100.

Tesla stated that Model 3s and Model Ys with the latest Hardware 4 system will get FSD (Supervised) first in Australia. While it has promised that vehicles with older hardware will receive the feature, the EV maker has not shared any timeline. However, Tesla has committed to providing a free hardware upgrade for Hardware 3 owners paying for FSD outright.

Even among Teslas with Hardware 4, only a select few people outside the company will be initially invited to the Early Access Program. The cautious approach is fitting as the Australian launch marks the first time Tesla will make FSD (Supervised) available in a right-hand drive country. Adapting the tech for such roads presents challenges, including handling different types of road markings, signage, and even driving rules.

However, Tesla Australia’s country director, Thom Drew, assured earlier this month that the company faced no regulatory blockers and that validation testing was almost completed. Tesla had shared a video of a car navigating autonomously in Melbourne and Sydney.

Tesla is actively testing FSD (Supervised) in Europe.
