Tesla has begun rolling out its latest software update, 2025.20, and while it doesn’t bring flashy new features like those that were included in the Spring Update, it delivers a much-appreciated quality-of-life improvement for owners.
This update introduces a new way to stop charging and release the charge cable—by simply pulling and holding the rear door handle for three seconds.
This new feature allows drivers to quickly and easily unlatch the charging cable, eliminating the need to interact with the car’s screen or mobile app. The only requirement is that the vehicle must be unlocked or a recognized key must be nearby.

Practical Use Cases for Everyday Drivers
For most people this will not be a well-used feature as Tesla Superchargers, the Wall Connector, and Mobile Connector all have buttons to stop the charge session and unlatch the cable. But this will be helpful for drivers using third-party or destination chargers that often lack a dedicated unlatch button.
Instead of entering the car to tap the touchscreen or navigating through the Tesla app on a phone, users can now unplug and go with a simple tug on the door handle.
Here is how this small change will make a noticeable difference in day-to-day charging scenarios:
- For non-Tesla home chargers, this eliminates the extra steps of grabbing your phone or entering the vehicle.
- If a charge handle has a broken or non-functional button, this method provides a reliable fallback.
- At destination chargers, such as those at hotels or shopping centers, where cables often lack an easy release mechanism, this update brings a welcomed shortcut.
Previously, third-party solutions like Enhance Auto’s SEXY Buttons offered workarounds for cable unlatching, but Tesla has now made similar functionality standard for all of its vehicles. It’s a prime example of the company listening to user feedback and delivering helpful features through over-the-air updates.
While Tesla has introduced this new method, the traditional methods of ending a charging session remain available. Drivers can still use the vehicle’s touchscreen or the Tesla app to release the cable if preferred, or simply pressing the button on the charge handle if one is present.
