Tesla introduces battery health test in 2025.8.3 software update

Tesla has introduced a long-requested feature in its latest software update, 2025.8.3. With this update installed, owners can now easily run a battery test to measure battery health and energy retention, directly from the main user interface.

One of the biggest concerns from Tesla owners, both new and old alike, is around the health of their high-voltage battery. This concern often arises when the displayed range, either in percent or in km/miles, deviates from the advertised range. While this discrepancy is more due to changes in driving habits and environmental conditions than a distinct change in the battery’s overall health, owners are still left wondering how much their battery has degraded over time.

In order to understand your battery health, you previously had to get Tesla to run a diagnostic on your vehicle, or get a third-party shop to run a similar test. Tesla then introduced a battery health test, but this was only available while the vehicle was in Service Mode, and was not recommended to be completed by owners.

Now Tesla has brought a battery health test to the main user interface with software update 2025.8.3. Accessed via Controls > Service > Battery Health, Tesla owners can now easily get direct insight into their vehicle’s battery health and energy retention.

According to details of the new feature shared by owners who received the update in the first wave, the test requires the vehicle to remain connected to an AC charger for up to 16 hours to complete the diagnostic.

There is also another benefit of running the diagnostic in that it recalibrates your battery management system (BMS). Once it is complete, the range estimate displayed in your vehicle may be recalibrated, giving you a more accurate reading of your remaining range.

Along with the battery health test, Tesla has also reintroduced energy use intervals in the Energy app, and the battery’s energy estimate will adjust over time based on your vehicle’s usage characteristics, even without running the battery health test.

Here are the full release notes for Tesla software update 2025.8.3.

Minor Updates

  • View your last 10, 100, or 200 miles (15, 150, or 300 kilometers) of energy usage in the Consumption page, with the option to clear your history. Go to App Launcher > Energy app > Consumption.
  • Your battery’s energy estimate now accounts for your vehicle’s usage characteristics and will adjust over time based on your history. The total available battery energy remains unchanged.
  • You can now run a Battery Health Test to measure your battery’s energy retention compared to when it was new. Running this test may recalibrate the energy estimate, which could affect your displayed range. Go to Controls > Service > Battery Health.
  • This update includes important security fixes and improvements.
