Tesla files permit for new Supercharger in Whistler [British Columbia]

Tesla has filed a permit to build a new Supercharger station in Whistler, British Columbia. If the project gets approved this station will provide a much needed upgrade from the Urban (72kW) Supercharger in the paid parking garage of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

Despite no indication on Tesla’s map of a proposed Supercharger in the area, the company filed a development permit application with the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) for a new Supercharger at Whistler’s Marketplace Shopping Centre (4370 Lorimer Rd) in May. According to the RMOW website, the application was returned to Tesla with comments from the planner in September, although the details of those notes are not posted.

Tesla has since been able to resolve whatever issues there were with the plans, and their application is now in the review stage. This week a sign went up in the parking of Whistler’s Marketplace Shopping Centre notifying residents of Tesla’s intentions to build a 12 stall Supercharger located adjacent to the motorcycle parking area. According to the permit application the next stage will be for it go before the Advisory Design Council, and then to council for approval. No target dates for either of these were published.

Unfortunately the Whistler Market Place Shopping Center is also a paid parking lot, but not as bad the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Tesla owners wanting to plug in to the 72kW Urban Supercharger there have to pay $9 just to enter the parking garage, which will cover one hour of parking. At Whistler Market Place, the parking fee is just $1 for a 30 minute stay, however this paying this fee might not be required if you stay in your Tesla while it is charging.
