Tesla Expands Robotaxi Coverage Across Austin for the Fourth Time

Tesla’s Robotaxi network in Austin grew even larger this week, marking the fourth expansion since its launch in June. The latest update significantly broadens the service’s footprint, nearly wrapping the entire city in coverage.

When Tesla first introduced its Robotaxi program in Austin, the pilot area spanned just 22 square miles (57 sq km) in the southern part of the city. Over the past few months, however, Tesla has expanded the operational zone several times — first north into downtown, then east toward the airport, and now far beyond.

According to data from Tesla, the latest expansion has seen the service area grow from 91 square miles (236 sq km) to an impressive 173 square miles (448 sq km).

While the expanded service area is welcomed news, the company also says they have increased the number of available Robotaxis by another 50 percent, allowing for shorter wait times and broader access in the larger service area.

Tesla’s Robotaxi vehicles in Austin operate without a driver but include a “Safety Monitor” in the passenger seat for oversight. On freeways, where speeds are higher, Tesla still requires the monitor to sit in the driver’s seat for added safety.

Tesla currently operates its Robotaxi service in Austin, and a ride-hailing service in the Bay Area in California. However, Tesla has stated it aims to bring Robotaxi access to as many as ten U.S. metro areas before the end of the year.
