After months of speculation, Tesla has ended the popular referral program that provided owners with the opportunity to earn free Supercharger credits.
The change impacts vehicle products and solar panels, and is effective as of tomorrow, September 18 in every market that Tesla is currently in.
That means orders placed as of tomorrow will no longer be eligible for referral awards, but order placed before that date and not yet delivered will still earn them.
The change is visible in the Loot Box of the mobile app, where a message is now displayed thanking Tesla customers for the support that helped reduce CO2e emissions by 5 million metric tons in 2020 alone.
Tesla’s website also shows the change to the program, where it shows the program isn’t over entirely. Solar Roof orders are still eligible for a $500 reward through the referral program. (h/t: @SawyerMerritt)
As shown above, the message says “until further notice,” the wording of Tesla’s message hints that referral awards for vehicle purchases may one day come back.
If it does return, it could be in the form of incentivizing in-person referrals. Information surfaced earlier this year that Tesla was preparing to make significant changes to the referral program due to its high costs, which had ballooned to over $23M in Q1 2021 alone.
