Tesla has unveiled the Model Y refresh, and to the surprise of everyone, the company decided to buck the trend set by the re-designs of the Model S, Model X, and Model 3, and not go completely stalkless.
Since the introduction of the Model S refresh in 2021, Tesla has moved toward a stalkless design, integrating turn signals to the steering wheel and gear selection to the in-car display, or Auto Shift. This approach extended to the Model X refresh later that same year, and then eventually to the new Model 3 in late 2023.
While some liked the switch to an even more minimalistic interior, the removal of the turn signal stalk in particular was met with criticism from many. Tesla has apparently heard that feedback, and while everyone assumed the Model Y refresh would follow suit, the automaker has decided to keep the turn signal stalk, in an effort to balance its minimalistic design ethos and usability.
Tesla has described the new Model Y’s stalk as “precision-engineered” and “refined based on valuable customer feedback,” although they don’t describe exactly how it has been refined.
Tesla didn’t get rid of the steering wheel controls entirely, also saying on its website that they have “introduced customizable steering wheel switches, allowing quick and intuitive operation of the most frequently used vehicle functions to better meet drivers’ needs.”
This approach reflects Tesla’s recognition of the Model Y being the best-selling vehicle in the world, while also ensuring the vehicle remains approachable to a broad range of buyers.
