The Tesla Cybertruck has made an impressive entrance into the electric vehicle (EV) market, ranking as the third best-selling EV in the US for the third quarter of 2024. During this period Tesla sold 16,692 units of the Cybertruck, only being outsold by two of Tesla’s other popular models.
According to Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book data, the Cybertruck more than doubled the sales of its direct competitor, the Ford F-150 Lightning, which saw 7,162 units sold in the same quarter. This places Tesla’s all-electric pickup truck ahead of other electric truck makers as well. For example, the Cybertruck’s sales in Q3 2024 outpaced the combined sales of the Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and GMC Sierra EV.
These models collectively sold 15,671 units, still falling short of the Cybertruck’s total.
The Cybertruck’s arrival was long-awaited, and despite being a newcomer to the market, the Cybertruck’s success in Q3 is particularly remarkable given the competitive landscape of electric pickup trucks. While the Ford F-150 Lightning previously held a strong position, its sales growth has not been enough to fend off the competition from Tesla. Ford’s electric pickup did see an impressive 104.5% year-over-year increase in sales, but Tesla’s Cybertruck has quickly taken the lead.
The Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV, both of which have been on the market for a longer period, have also struggled to keep pace with Tesla. Rivian sold 3,817 R1T trucks in Q3, while the GMC Hummer EV saw 4,305 units sold. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, which have only recently entered production, are still ramping up, with 1,995 and 387 units sold, respectively.
The Cybertruck’s strong sales figures can be attributed to several factors, including Tesla’s established brand loyalty, its advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, and the unique design that sets it apart from conventional trucks. Additionally, Tesla’s ability to scale production quickly has been key to its success in meeting consumer demand, allowing the company to gain market share rapidly in the EV truck segment.
As noted at the top of this article, the Cybertruck in third place was only outsold by two other EVs, the Model 3 and Model Y, which accumulated 58,423 and 86,801 sales in the same time period. The combined results of all Tesla models put the Texas-based automaker far ahead of the competition, with a total of 166,923 sales in the third quarter. The next closest was Ford with just 23,509 sales in comparison.
