Tesla Confirms FSD Subscriber Count for the First Time, Sort Of

Tesla has revealed a key metric that it has never publicly disclosed before: how many people worldwide are currently using Full Self-Driving (Supervised). However, the newly released figure comes with an important caveat. Tesla’s count combines both up-front FSD purchases and active monthly subscriptions, rather than separating the two.

With that distinction in mind, Tesla said in its Q4 2025 shareholder deck the number of active FSD subscriptions reached 1.1 million in 2025, up from 800,000 in 2024, 600,000 in 2023, 500,000 in 2022, and 400,000 in 2021. That steady climb represents nearly a doubling of subscribers over the past two years alone, even as global vehicle deliveries softened in 2025.

At current pricing, those 1.1 million subscribers would translate into roughly $1.3 billion in annual recurring revenue, making FSD one of Tesla’s highest-margin products. However, as we noted, that doesn’t cover the entire picture as that includes up-front purchases.

Until now, the most concrete data point available came from early 2023, when Tesla said there were roughly 400,000 FSD purchases in North America. Tesla’s latest disclosure, by contrast, represents a global total, making it difficult to determine how much of the 1.1 million reflects legacy one-time purchases versus recurring subscription revenue.

Tesla also confirmed that subscription growth (not the total number of subscriptions) accelerated meaningfully last year. “Monthly subscriptions to FSD (Supervised) continued to grow sequentially and more than doubled in 2025,” the company wrote.

The rapid uptake helps explain Tesla’s next major shift. As of February 14, Tesla is moving FSD to a subscription-only model. The company stated, “Starting this quarter, we are transitioning access to FSD (Supervised)1 to monthly subscriptions only as we begin to sunset the up-front payment option.”

One reason why Tesla could be disclosing these figures for the first time and shifting to FSD subscriptions only is because of CEO Elon Musk’s new compensation package. One of the long-term milestones tied to Musk’s performance-based pay requires Tesla to achieve 10 million active FSD subscriptions.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect the fact Tesla’s figure includes both up-front purchases and subscriptions. We apologize for any confusion caused.
