Tesla breaks ground on Canada’s largest Supercharger in Ajax [Ontario]

Tesla has officially started construction on what will become not only Ontario’s largest Supercharger station, but also Canada’s, as a massive 44-stall site is coming soon to Ajax, Ontario.

This new development marks a major expansion of Tesla’s charging infrastructure in the Greater Toronto Area and is set to surpass what is currently Canada’s largest Supercharger station on the west coast in Richmond, British Columbia, which boasts 40 V3 Supercharger stalls.

The project was revealed by JML Electric, a frequent Tesla Supercharger contractor in Ontario, who shared a photo of the groundbreaking at the site. Located in the parking lot of Durham Centre, at 40 Kingston Road East, is it situated just off Highway 401, one of Canada’s busiest transportation corridors. With its location the Ajax Supercharger will serve as a key charging hub for Tesla drivers traveling across southern Ontario.

Its location in the Durham Centre shopping plaza also provides convenient access to retail stores and restaurants for drivers while they charge their vehicles.

With construction only just starting, we don’t know yet if this site will feature V3 or V4 Supercharger posts.

For now, the largest Supercharger in Canada is the 40-stall station in Richmond, BC, quietly built atop a parking garage at 4660 Garden City Road. That station only came to public attention shortly before it opened in September 2023, after being spotted in the background of a Facebook Marketplace car listing.

As for Ontario, this 44-stall Supercharger will easily surpass the province’s largest station, a 32-stall site in Mississauga.

Tesla has not officially listed the Ajax site on its Supercharger map as an upcoming location. It was previously listed as a site “in development,” but that pin was removed in December 2024. Based on past construction timelines, the station could be completed by the end of summer, but as we have seen with other Superchargers in Ontario, the wait for it be turned on could be much longer.
