Tesla has achieved another significant milestone. Over the weekend the company announced the start of operations at its new lithium refinery, located just outside of Corpus Christi, Texas.
According to a post from Tesla on X, raw materials were successfully passed through the refinery’s kiln for the first time, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Tesla’s vertical integration strategy.

Tesla’s Texas lithium refinery is designed to boost global lithium refining capacity, which is critical for the EV and renewable energy sectors. Refined lithium is an essential ingredient in the batteries that power not only Tesla’s electric vehicles but also its energy storage solutions like the Powerwall and Megapack.
By refining lithium domestically, Tesla aims to reduce dependence on international suppliers and streamline production timelines, while also mitigating potential geopolitical risks.
The facility near Corpus Christi, which started construction in 2023, will process spodumene concentrate, a lithium-rich mineral, into battery-grade lithium hydroxide. This material will then be used in Tesla’s battery manufacturing facilities, including those at Gigafactories in the US and globally.
While the start of operations at the Texas lithium refinery is a major milestone, it’s just the beginning. Tesla plans to ramp up production in the coming months, refining increasing amounts of lithium to support its vehicle delivery targets and battery production goals.
