Tesla begins Model S and Model X phase out with South Korea order deadline

Tesla has announced a firm deadline for Model S and Model X orders in South Korea, marking the first time the company has set a cutoff for its flagship vehicles in any market. The announcement comes as Tesla prepares to wind down production of the two models at its Fremont factory.

According to information shared through Tesla’s official South Korea blog, orders for the Model S and Model X in South Korea will only be accepted until March 31, 2026, marking the first time the company has set a clear cutoff date for the two vehicles in any market.

The notice, labeled as a “limited time” opportunity, encourages customers to place orders before the deadline, highlighting features like “Immediately enjoy Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” and “Uncompromising luxury and dynamic performance.” Currently FSD is only available to Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck owners in South Korea.

While Tesla has not officially confirmed a global order timeline, this move aligns with what we’ve previously reported—production of the Model S and Model X at Fremont is expected to wind down in the near future, with Elon Musk announcing the company’s Q4 2025 earnings call that production will end at the end of Q2 2026.

The decision to end production is tied to weakening sales over the last couple of years for both vehicles, and also Tesla’s broader strategy, including reallocating production capacity for the Optimus humanoid robot.

South Korea now appears to be the first market where Tesla is formalizing that transition with a hard deadline, likely influenced by shipping timelines needed to fulfill final orders before production winds down—potentially offering a glimpse into what could soon happen in other regions around the world.

At the same time, Tesla is preparing to introduce a new vehicle that could effectively replace the outgoing flagship models in South Korea.

Recent regulatory filings confirm the Model Y L—a longer-wheelbase, three-row six-seat version of Tesla’s best-selling SUV—has now been certified in South Korea through the Korea Energy Agency.

The certification follows sightings of camouflaged Model Y L prototypes already testing on public roads in South Korea, further suggesting that a launch could be imminent.

Tesla has been slowly rolling out the Model Y L in new markets. As of this month the six-seat version of the electric SUV is now available for purchase in Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand, the first international markets outside of China after it was first introduced there last year.
