Tesla has released details on its 2024 holiday software update, and it is introducing a long-awaited Apple Watch app,
According to Tesla, the new Apple Watch companion app will not provide all of the same functionality that is available through the mobile app, but enough to make owners happy. With the Apple Watch app, owner can unlock their vehicles, check battery status, open the frunk, and even control the climate system, all without needing to have their smartphones with them.
Tesla shared an image of the new app, which incorporates the “phone key” functionality already familiar to users of the Tesla mobile app.
This addition will bring to an end to the reliance on third-party apps which had previously filled the gap for smartwatch users. Now, Tesla owners will have an official solution that integrates seamlessly with the broader Tesla ecosystem.
The Apple Watch app will be a game-changer for moments when carrying a smartphone isn’t practical. Whether going for a quick jog or stepping out for errands, Tesla owners can leave their phones behind without sacrificing vehicle access. The app’s design mirrors the functionality of its mobile counterpart, ensuring users can adapt quickly.
While Apple Watch users are rejoicing, Wear OS smartwatch owners are feeling left out, as Tesla has not yet announced plans for an Android equivalent. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if Tesla considers additional platform support in the future given Elon Musk’s response to the request earlier this year.
