Tesla App Update Reveals Work on Advanced Trip Planner, V2G Features, and Insurance Improvements

app update

While the release notes only mention bug fixes and improvements, Tesla’s latest mobile app update, version 4.54.5, has some hidden features in the background that point to some promising new features.

Among them is a more powerful trip planning tool, potentially giving owners the ability to map out complex journeys before sending them directly to their vehicles, upcoming improvements related to vehicle-to-grid (V2G) energy sharing, and also Tesla Insurance.

“Voyager” Trip Planner

The newly discovered strings, uncovered by Tesla App Updates on X, reference a new endpoint, api/1/vehicles/plan_voyager_trip, hinting at a more sophisticated route planning system that goes beyond simply sending a destination to a car. Based on the code references, Voyager could allow drivers to build detailed itineraries from their phone before pushing them directly to the vehicle’s navigation system.

If implemented as suggested by the code, the system could support multi-stop routes, elevation analysis, and potentially even weather-aware planning. That level of functionality would put Tesla’s native trip planning closer to third-party tools like A Better Routeplanner (ABRP), which many Tesla owners currently rely on for complex trips.

Another string, vehicleSupportsVoyagerTripPlanner, indicates the feature may only be available on certain vehicles. That could mean newer infotainment hardware—such as Tesla’s AMD Ryzen-based systems—may be required to run the more demanding calculations. It may also be optimized for specific vehicles like the Cybertruck, which often require specialized routing for towing.

The strings also reference actions like PLAN_TRIP_VOYAGER and error messages such as “Voyager trip plan request failed,” confirming that trip plans would likely be built in the app and then transmitted directly to the vehicle.

Here are some mockups of what this feature may look like once it rolls out.

Vehicle-to-Grid Integration

The app update also contains significant references to Tesla’s vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. New strings such as handleEnergySitePowershareLiveDataEffect suggest the app will soon be able to display real-time data when a vehicle is actively sending power back to the electrical grid. This goes beyond Tesla’s existing Powershare functionality, which currently allows vehicles to power a home during outages, and is likely tied to Tesla’s upcoming Powershare Grid Support Program in Texas.

Through that program, Cybertruck owners will be able to send electricity from their vehicle back to the grid and receive compensation for helping support energy demand during peak periods.

Tesla also appears to be adding controls to allow owners to opt out of these events if they want to keep their battery fully charged for driving.

Tesla Insurance Improvements

The update also hints at improvements to Tesla Insurance within the app. New interface elements such as InsuranceBannerCarousel suggest users will be able to easily swipe between multiple policies or vehicles.

Another addition appears to be native digital insurance cards. Strings referencing fetchInsuranceCard indicate the app may soon download proof of insurance directly to the device, allowing drivers to access it even without cellular service.

Taken together, the features discovered in Tesla’s latest app code suggest the company is continuing to expand its mobile platform into a central hub for vehicles, energy management, and insurance—while potentially eliminating the need for several third-party tools along the way.
