Starlink to Bring High-Speed Internet to Trains in Prague and Latvia

Rail passengers in Prague and Latvia may soon experience a major upgrade in internet connectivity, as Starlink satellite technology is being tested for deployment on trains in both countries.

Bridging Connectivity in Latvia

Latvia’s passenger rail operator, Vivi, announced this week it has started trials in collaboration with RebelRoam to evaluate the feasibility of combining 5G mobile networks with Starlink satellite equipment. The tests involve Peplink multimode routers that aggregate 4G/5G signals from different providers alongside Starlink’s high-speed satellite connection. This hybrid approach aims to ensure continuous internet service, particularly in rural and remote areas where traditional cellular coverage is inconsistent. (via Latvian Public Media)

If successful, Starlink integration would enable passengers to enjoy seamless connectivity throughout their journey, regardless of signal limitations in sparsely populated areas.

Czech Railways Takes a Direct Approach

Meanwhile, Czech Railways has confirmed plans to test Starlink satellite internet on its trains, with initial trials expected to begin by spring 2025. Unlike Latvia’s model, Czech Railways has engaged directly with SpaceX’s Starlink team, securing technology designed specifically for rail transport.

According to company officials, the new system will feature satellite terminals mounted on train roofs, ensuring a more reliable and stable connection. Previous efforts to enhance train connectivity in the Czech Republic included mobile signal repeaters and modified train windows, but these measures have proven insufficient for uninterrupted internet service. The addition of Starlink’s satellite network is expected to significantly improve data speeds and reliability, addressing longstanding complaints from passengers.

A Growing Trend in European Rail Connectivity

The adoption of Starlink in Latvia and Prague mirrors recent efforts by ScotRail, which partnered with SpaceX in late 2024 to bring high-speed internet to Scotland’s rail network. ScotRail’s integration of Starlink has already enhanced onboard WiFi services for passengers while also supporting operational improvements, including real-time diagnostics and remote monitoring of track conditions.
