Starlink Offers One Month of Free Internet to Win Back Former Customers

SpaceX is trying a new strategy to reconnect with past Starlink users: one month of free service. The satellite internet provider has begun emailing former subscribers across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia, encouraging them to reactivate their accounts before the end of September.

A Limited-Time Comeback Deal

According to the company’s email to former customers, those who previously canceled or suspended their accounts can return to Starlink at no charge through September 30. The promotion, worth up to C$140/US$120 depending on the regional plan, only applies to service lines that received the official invitation email.

This isn’t the first time Starlink has dangled incentives to grow its subscriber base. Over the summer, SpaceX introduced multiple promotions, including a discount on its standard dish kit and temporary price reductions for certain service tiers in select regions.

Why Customers Leave—and Why They Might Return

Starlink’s biggest appeal has always been high-speed connectivity in rural or underserved areas. But not every subscriber stays on board. Some users only need service intermittently for travel, RV use, or seasonal living, while others cancel due to cost or performance issues.

At C$140/US$120 per month for the residential plan in Canada and the U.S. respectively, Starlink is more expensive than many terrestrial internet options. Network congestion in crowded service zones has also been a sticking point, with some regions imposing hefty congestion fees.

Still, SpaceX is betting that recent network improvements could win back skeptical users. Over the past year, the company has deployed more than 2,300 additional satellites, boosting overall capacity, speed, and reliability.

New features, such as advanced “beam switching” technology, are also designed to help dishes perform better in environments with tree cover or other obstructions.

Global Expansion Continues

The push to re-engage former subscribers comes as Starlink reaches new growth milestones. In July, SpaceX reported that the U.S. user base had climbed above 2 million, up from 1.4 million a year earlier. Worldwide, Starlink now serves more than 7 million customers across 150 countries.
