Rivian drivers eager to try out the brand’s flashy new off-road and performance features will have to wait a little longer. The automaker has quietly postponed the release of its “Kick Turn” and “RAD Tuner” functions for the 2026 R1T and R1S Quad models until later this year, after initially promising a September rollout.
Rivian Pushes Back OTA Update
Both features were announced earlier this summer at the launch of the updated 2026 R1 lineup. Rivian said the features would arrive via an over-the-air (OTA) update, but October has come without any sign of them. In a statement to The Drive, a Rivian spokesperson explained that the company is taking more time to refine the technology.
“We know many of you are eager to try out Kick Turn and RAD Tuner on the all-new Quad. These features are unlike anything on the road today, and we’re taking a little extra time to fine-tune their performance,” the spokesperson said. “That’s why we’re adjusting the launch for both features slightly from September, to now launching by the end of this year. We promise they’ll be worth the wait!”
While Rivian hasn’t given an exact date for the update, owners can expect it sometime before the holidays.
What Makes Kick Turn and RAD Tuner Special
The Kick Turn feature, available exclusively on the new quad-motor R1T and R1S models, replaces Tank Turn, a feature that was supposed to launch with the original quad motor but never made it into production vehicles for a variety of reasons. Now with Kick Turn, drivers can perform an almost 360-degree rotation by spinning the left and right wheels in opposite directions, allowing for off-road maneuvers in tight spaces.
The system takes advantage of Rivian’s new in-house motor setup, something not possible with the first-generation R1 vehicles that used Bosch components.
Meanwhile, the RAD Tuner adds a deep level of personalization to vehicle dynamics. It allows drivers to fine-tune everything from acceleration response and regenerative braking to torque split, suspension height, and traction control. The feature has been described as an individual drive mode on steroids, offering serious customization for both on-road and off-road enthusiasts.
Future Availability
While Rivian hinted that the RAD Tuner might eventually be offered on other performance trims, Kick Turn will remain exclusive to the latest Quad models.
For now, Rivian owners will need to be patient as the company works to polish the software. If the final versions perform as promised, the wait could be worth it.
