Rivian Switches to Google Maps for Navigation System

Rivian owners are beginning to see a significant change on their in-vehicle screens, as the electric automaker rolls out a major upgrade to its navigation system—now powered by Google Maps.

The new system, which is rolling out starting today and is dubbed Rivian Navigation with Google Maps, is built using the Google Maps Auto SDK, enabling Rivian to fully customize the user interface while leveraging Google’s robust mapping capabilities. This means drivers can enjoy real-time traffic updates, more accurate estimated arrival times, improved routing, and detailed satellite imagery—wrapped in a uniquely Rivian visual design.

Unlike Android Automotive, which gives Google direct control over the in-car operating system, Rivian’s implementation keeps full control in-house. The company has integrated Google Maps’ features while maintaining its own EV-specific tools, such as range-on-arrival estimates, charging stop planning, and the proprietary Charging Scores system.

According to Rivian, the updated interface has also been refreshed with enhanced topography and natural color palettes to reflect the automaker’s outdoors-oriented brand, with improved “glanceability” to reduce distractions.

The update is also coming to the Rivian mobile app, allowing users to plan routes, check charging locations, share destinations, and view updated place information like operating hours, ratings, and photos—all sourced from Google Maps.

This collaboration highlights a growing trend among automakers turning to others for software solutions without giving up their own design language and user experience. The integration solves a long-standing EV problem: ensuring that navigation systems can reliably plan routes that include compatible charging infrastructure, with confidence-inspiring range estimates along the way.

The rollout of Rivian Navigation with Google Maps began today, July 15, 2025, and is expected to reach all Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles, including both Gen 1 and Gen 2, over the coming days.
