Rivian adds self-calibrating cameras through OTA software update for Gen 2 vehicles

Rivian has rolled out a significant update to its Autonomy Platform, adding the ability for the vehicle’s cameras to self-calibrate. The new capability, delivered through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, allows Gen 2 Rivian vehicles to continuously adjust and fine-tune their camera alignment while driving—improving Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) performance and reducing the need for service visits.

Traditionally, camera calibration for Rivian owners has been a manual process that required a service appointment to ensure the cameras feeding a vehicle’s perception system were properly aligned. The automaker’s new approach eliminates much of that hassle. Now, Gen 2 vehicles can automatically calibrate themselves through a process that runs silently in the background during every drive.

According to Rivian, the system performs two types of calibration. The first is Static calibration, which occurs when the vehicle is stopped—like at a red light—using visual markers to align the cameras with one another.

The second is dynamic calibration, which activates between 5 and 70 mph (8-112 km/h), adapting the cameras to match the vehicle’s driving direction. These algorithms work continuously, meaning the vehicle is always fine-tuning itself to maintain optimal accuracy.

This results in improved reliability of driver-assistance features and reduced trips to the service center for minor camera issues. Rivian says that new vehicles will complete their first calibration within 15 to 60 minutes of typical driving, depending on road type and conditions.

Drivers may briefly see a message prompting them to “keep driving” while calibration completes, after which a notification confirms the process is finished.

The feature arrives just ahead of Rivian’s first-ever Autonomy Day, expected in December, where the company will showcase upcoming advancements in driver-assistance and hands-free driving technologies.
