Images of Rivian’s upcoming R2 electric SUV have appeared again online. This time, it is captured using a Tesla Supercharger without an adapter.
The slightly camouflaged prototype was spotted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port at the rear on the driver’s side, matching Tesla’s own design choices. It is the first time a Rivian-made vehicle has been sighted with a native NACS port. The company’s R1 cars can only connect to Superchargers with NACS-to-CCS adapters.

The R2 is expected to become available next year and start at US$45,000. It is Rivian’s offering for the more affordable EV segment, and analysts expect its manufacturing costs to be half as much as those of the R1 models.
The R1 line will also feature native NACS ports, starting with the 2026 model year. According to Rivian, customers will be able to plug and charge with automatic billing, just like Teslas. Superchargers will also show on Rivian navigation systems when drivers plan their trips, along with charger speeds and availability information.
Rivian started constructing its second factory in Georgia earlier this week. The $5 billion facility will host the R2 production when it opens in 2028. However, the supply chain for the upcoming EV is starting to take shape, with French supplier OPmobility slated to produce bumpers at Rivian’s industrial park in Normal, Illinois.
