Man charged in arson of Tesla Model Y and Cybertruck in Calgary

Calgary Police have laid charges in connection with two separate arson attacks that targeted Tesla vehicles earlier this year, both occurring within a 24-hour span in southeast Calgary.

The first incident took place on March 18, 2025. A woman parked her Model Y at a public charging station on 12th Avenue S.E. around 9:30 p.m. When she returned at roughly 11 p.m., she discovered her vehicle engulfed in flames.

Less than a day later, on March 19, emergency crews were dispatched to a Tesla storage lot on Fairmount Drive S.E. at approximately 9:50 p.m., where a Cybertruck was found burning inside the facility.

With two similar incidents in such close proximity, the Calgary Police Service Arson Unit launched a coordinated investigation. Through tips provided by the community and forensic analysis, police later located DNA evidence linking a suspect to one of the crime scenes.

As a result of the investigation, 38-year-old Kurt Mayville of Calgary has been charged with two counts of arson. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, January 12, 2026.

These two cases were part of a troubling pattern of targeted attacks against Tesla vehicles and infrastructure in Canada earlier this year. Other incidents during the same week included damage to dozens of Teslas at a facility in Hamilton, Ontario, a Model S set on fire in London, Ontario, and vandalism at a Supercharger station in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
