Lucid has issued a recall for over 1,500 of its Air Pure sedans in Canada and the United States after discovering a defect that could lead to a complete loss of drive power. The recall, issued under Transport Canada Recall # 2024-673 and NHTSA Recall No. 24V-836, affects the 2024 and 2025 model years of the Air Pure Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles.
According to the recall notices, the defect involves a shortened rear subframe wiring harness, which was inadvertently produced with reduced length due to a documentation error. This design flaw places excessive stress on the harness connector, potentially causing intermittent or total disconnection.
In affected vehicles, of which there are just 7 in Canada and 1,539 in the US, a complete disconnection results in a total loss of power from the rear drive unit. Critical functions like power steering and braking remain unaffected, but the loss of motive power significantly increases the risk of a crash.
According to Lucid’s submission to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 0.4% of the recalled vehicles have reported an unwarned complete loss of power. The manufacturing defect occurred when the shortened wiring harnesses were installed between November 29, 2023, and October 17, 2024.
Since October 17, 2024, all Lucid Air vehicles have been produced with the correct wiring harness design, resolving the issue for future deliveries.
If you own one of the affected vehicles, look out for these warning messages which will appear prior to a power loss:
- “Drive System Warning: Contact Customer Care”
- “Drive System Fault: Contact Customer Care”
- “Battery System Fault: Vehicle powering down in 2 minutes”
- “Driving Power Reduced: Vehicle can be driven but performance may be limited”
Lucid says all affected Air Pure RWD vehicles will have their wiring harnesses replaced with components of the original design length at no cost.
The Air Pure RWD is Lucid’s entry-level model, starting at C$96,800 or US$69,900. The company delivered 2,781 vehicles in the third quarter of 2024, marking its best quarter yet. The automaker also produced 1,805 vehicles for the quarter, and has reiterated its projected 9,000 vehicle production target for 2024.
