Lucid eyes 1,300 acre Arizona expansion with ‘Project Saguaro’

Lucid is taking the first steps toward a significant future expansion of its manufacturing footprint in Casa Grande, Arizona.

Lucid’s current manufacturing hub, known as the Advanced Manufacturing Plant 1 (AMP-1), began construction in December 2019 and was completed by December 2020. This facility marked a milestone as the first greenfield, dedicated electric vehicle factory in North America. Initially spanning approximately 999,000 square feet, AMP-1 was designed to allow for multiple phases of expansion.

The first phase enabled the production of the Lucid Air sedan, with an initial capacity of up to 30,000 units annually. Lucid began a significant expansion of AMP-1 in early 2021 to accommodating future models and increased production. This expansion added approximately 3 million square feet, bringing the facility’s total footprint to over 3.85 million square feet.

Now the company is taking it a step further. According to a report by AZCentral, Lucid has kicked off ‘Project Saguaro,’ with plans to annex and rezone 1,300 acres of land adjacent to its existing facility. The land in question is owned by Pinal County, but is currently leased to Lucid, with the company holding an option to purchase.

While Lucid has no immediate plans to develop the land, the acquisition would allow the automaker to create a “decades-long expansion zone” to accommodate future growth.

In addition to its facility in Arizona, Lucid has expanded internationally with the build out of Advanced Manufacturing Plant 2 (AMP-2) in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Opened in September 2023, AMP-2 is Lucid’s first manufacturing facility outside the United States and was Saudi Arabia’s first-ever car manufacturing plant.

The facility initially focuses on semi knocked-down (SKD) assembly, reassembling Lucid Air vehicle kits pre-manufactured at AMP-1 in Arizona, with an annual capacity of 5,000 vehicles. Plans are underway to transition AMP-2 to complete build unit (CBU) production in the next few years, aiming for an additional annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles.
