James May Test Drives Tesla Cybertruck, Calls It ‘Willfully Ugly’ But Lovable

James May, one of the leading TV car presenters, took the Tesla Cybertruck for a spin around California in his latest YouTube video. The ex-Top Gear and Grand Tour host touched on several of the truck’s features, including its design, which he noted could be “so willfully ugly so that you would love it.”

In fact, May went into great detail over the design aspects of the vehicle. One of the features that he spent a lot of time touching on was the detailed work on the body and hood. As he notes, each part of the body is slightly convex as it creates the ideal reflection without looking like a folded cardboard box, which was entirely possible due to the Cybertruck’s sharp edges.

He also gave props to the Tesla designers, who have designed the quietest electric windows May has ever experienced.

In addition to the design, May touched on the Cybertruck’s rare but fun-to-drive steer-by-wire design. He also mentioned that the Cybertruck is the first vehicle with steer-by-wire without a mechanical backup.

May even took the time to cross-promote his new gin brand during the video while showcasing the Cybertruck carrying capacity. According to his math, the Cybertruck would be able to haul 840 bottles of James Gin.

Although May said he did not want a Cybertruck, he couldn’t help but love it. The reason for that love? The Cybertruck challenges conventions while being a “very ballsy and quite humorous” vehicle to drive.
