GM Says It Surpassed Tesla to Become Canada’s Top EV Seller

General Motors has declared itself the new electric vehicle (EV) sales leader in Canada, claiming that it outsold every other automaker—including Tesla—during the final quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.

GM Canada shared recently on social media that it was the #1 EV seller in Canada, without providing exact figures. However, when asked for clarification by GM Authority, the automaker said the claim is based on Canadian vehicle registration data from Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.

According to GM Canada’s Q1 2025 sales report, it shows the charge was led by the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which saw its sales rise 56% in Q1 2025, the Cadillac Lyriq (+123.6%), and even the GMC Hummer EV pickup (+232.1%). Collectively across its brands, GM Canada delivered a total of 15,282 EVs in Q4 2024, followed by 5,750 in the first quarter of 2025, GM Authority says.

This surge in EV sales marked GM Canada’s best-ever quarter for EV deliveries in Q1, even amid a turbulent incentive environment. Both federal and Quebec EV rebate programs were temporarily suspended during the quarter, leading to a sharp decline in Tesla’s performance. In Quebec—Canada’s largest EV market—Tesla registrations dropped by 90% quarter-over-quarter, from 5,097 units in Q4 2024 to just 524 in Q1 2025.

GM plans to expand its EV lineup even further with the upcoming Cadillac Escalade IQL, Lyriq-V, Vistiq, and a redesigned Chevrolet Bolt EV set to debut later this year.
